Born on 29 March 1998 in Alor Setar, Zii Jia has made quite the name for
himself in the realm of badminton. As of now, he has won a total of 166 games
in the category of men’s singles, including 2 bronze medals, 4 silver medals
and 1 gold medal. He currently ranks at number 8 in the entire world.
This year, Lee Zii Jia represented Malaysia in
the category of men’s singles in badminton at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This is
his journey.
- Sunday, July 25th
Zii Jia began his Olympic journey with his
first game. He competed against Artem Pochtarov from Ukraine. The match ended
in victory with Zii Jia winning with a straight set, the scores 21-5 and 21-11
respectively.
- Wednesday, July 28th
Zii Jia’s next opponent was Brice Leverdez.
While the match was first scheduled to begin at around 6:30 p.m,
it was delayed to 7:00 p.m and later even
further. Despite the minor inconvenience to Malaysian viewers who wished to
watch the match, once it finally began, it ended relatively quickly as Leverdez
was defeated with scores 21-17 and 21-5.
- Thursday, July 29th
Stakes began to rise when Zii Jia’s next
opponent was announced to be Chen Long from China. Chen Long currently ranks at
number 6 in the world and has significantly more experience than Zii Jia. While
the possibility of winning was presented after Zii Jia defeated Chen Long in
the first round with 21-8, hope of winning quickly diminished as Chen Long won
the next two rounds with 21-19 and 21-5 respectively.
Conclusion
Despite not being able to advance that far
into the games, fans must not forget that along with still being young, this
year’s Olympics were also Zii Jia’s first. On his personal Instagram, Zii Jia
hopes to give his best efforts and come back much stronger in the future. May
he be able to keep growing as a badminton player, and continue the legacy of
those who have risen before him.
